Patient Expectations Are Greater Than Ever In Private Practice…

Gain Confidence And Clarity By Developing Your Step By Step System Now To Get Patient ‘Buy-In’, Adherence And Consistently Great Results Without Relying On Your Hands-On Treatment…

The Go-To Therapist Triangle

“Every Therapist Should Enjoy Their Job And Get Better Than ‘Average’ Results…”

In the real world patient’s don’t always present like the textbooks would have us believe.

They expect some quick relief, some hands-on treatment and a quick resolution to their problem usually (Potter et al, 2003).

The problem is it is usually not as simple as this when a pain experience and the human body is concerned.

The Hands-On Dominant Therapist with BG

This may leave you relying on your hands-on treatment too much, using the same exercises with every patient and having no real long term plan to bridge the gap between low level and high level rehab…

A recent trend in physiotherapy has been to completely avoid using manual therapy, focus more on pain neuroscience explanation and then possibly prescribe strengthening exercises…

The Strengthening Dominant Therapist with BG

While the latter is the ‘ideal’ scenario, from my experience of working in private practice, it is not always as simple as this in the real world…

…nor does every patient respond positively to pain-science and just strengthening exercises.

As they say in the business world, the most dangerous number is 1!

Relying on just your hands, just your words or just your favourite exercises.

It can be frustrating when you have a patient in front of you not responding to your treatment and even embarrassing when they are handing their hard-earned money at the end of a session…

That’s why at the ‘Go-To’ Physio, we believe there shouldn’t be ‘a just hands-on approach’ or a ‘just a strengthening approach’.

We believe you should first and foremost look at the person in front of you and understand the ‘why’ behind everything you’re doing.

We’ve been able to help over 600 therapists now (and growing) in over 30 countries look at the person first, pain second and clinically reason a step by step graded exposure program using the 8 pillars approach.

James Clear said it best, “You do not rise to the level of your goals, you fall to the level of your systems”…

Or in the case of our patients…

Your patients do not rise to the level of their goals, they fall to the level of YOUR systems…

Step 1 Developing Your Step By Step System For Complete Confidence And Clarity…

The first step is to develop a sound foundational step by step system that works for you…

Step 2 Patient ‘Buy-In’ & Adherence For Long Lasting Results, Reviews, Referrals, Retention & Recognition

While Patient expectations are higher than ever in regards to wanting quick outcomes, there is actually a weak correlation between outcomes and a happy patient (Hush et al, 2011)…

Patients want therapists who are skilful, knowledgeable, professional, friendly and have effective communication…

Aspects of communication that patients value are a helpful explanation about the condition, the ability to give prognostic information, and the ability to explain the patient’s role in the treatment process

Patient satisfaction is determined more by interactions with the therapist and the process of care than by the outcome of care.

And what about patient adherence to exercise?

Well, we know compliance is not very common (Dean et al, 2005).

The patient needs to ‘feel the difference’ of the exercise and be able to incorporate them into everyday life for best success (Campbell et al, 2001).

In order to give ourselves the best chance of success with our patients, we need to…

  1. Set Expectations With Realistic Timeframes
  2. Design Meaningful Treatment Plans That Fit Into Your Patients Life
  3. Complete Treatment Plans By Prescribing Exercises That Your Patient Can Actually ‘Feel The Difference’

Step 3 Get Consistently Great Results, Reviews, Referrals And Retention Of Past Patients

Implementing your step by step system fine-tuning the patient journey has allowed you to now earn the right to build a ‘Go-To’ Clinic.

Your Next Steps To Earning The Right To Building Your Profitable ‘Go-To’ Clinic Ethically…

Having a step by step system in place will allow you to risk mitigate your clinic’s reputation by ensuring there is a minimum standard of clinical care when other therapists join your practice as you naturally grow.

Having a step by step treatment system will:

  1. Save time in sessions
  2. Improves focus
  3. Improve consistency
  4. Enables delegation
  5. Less energy drain due to less decision making

Building a ‘Go-To’ Therapist practice isn’t difficult if built on a solid foundation of being able to get consistently great, long-lasting results.

The principles and strategies can be applied to a chartered physiotherapist, physical therapist, sports therapist, sports rehabilitation therapist or sports massage therapist’s practice wherever you are in the world.

I hear so many therapists saying they want to have a ‘Go-To’ Therapist practice but, in reality, aren’t actually willing to put the work in to achieve this.

How much would a full diary and a consistent word of mouth referral system TRULY be worth to you and your family? £50,000 a year? Or actually, £100,000+ a year if you truly have the confidence and ‘know-how’ to progress a patient through a FULL treatment plan EVEN IF they have seen numerous therapists before you?

If your patient ethically needs 6 sessions but you don’t know how to progress them or clearly and logically EFFECTIVELY EXPLAIN WHY they need these sessions…

…or they feel like they are not making progress and drop off after 4 sessions, how much is that REALLY costing you, your business and your family?

The two extra sessions the patient ethically needed and the two filled slots in your diary?

Or the extra 6+ RETENTION sessions that patient may need with a new problem in the future?

Or the extra 6+ REFERRAL sessions from the person that the patient WOULD have sent you if you had got MEANINGFUL RESULTS?

You see, I see most therapists complaining about not being busy enough or not seeing enough patients EVEN THOUGH they’ve spent hundreds and hundreds of pounds on Facebook, Google Adwords and other marketing events when the TRUE PROBLEM is they actually don’t have the CLARITY to:

  1. Make sense of the patient’s story and make sense of the objective assessment.
  2. Effectively explain to the patient the true problem but also the solution and the plan to get them to the desired destination.
  3. Effectively implement a progressive step-by-step plan that gets results in the real world and ensures it is tailored to the patient’s actual needs (and not just following your favourite exercises for these symptoms that work well with some patients but not others).
  4. Know how to integrate your hands-on treatment with your progressive rehab exercises.
  5. Know when to push the patient but also when to back off.
  6. Most importantly, know when the patient is ready to return to, and be successful with, the activities that are meaningful to their life and situation, even under times of high stress.

Sure, you might be OK for 1-2 sessions and change someone’s pain experience short term but what happens when the patient’s progress stalls or, worse, the pain returns with a vengeance and that ‘novel’ hands-on stimulus isn’t so novel anymore and isn’t working like it was in the first few sessions?

Where to then?

That’s where the real money is leaking out of your business, or will be leaking out of your future business!!

If you’ve implemented steps 1 and 2 above, you are now working smarter, not harder in building a ‘Go-To’ Clinic foundation that is built for long term growth.

Once you have this in place, then you will need help with the business skills to really take it to the next level along with a TEAM of ‘Go-To’ Therapists.

Once steps 1-3 are in place, now proceed to build your Go-To Clinic…
